The helm starboard cabinet is coming along nicely, but I’ve got aft deck mahogany plywood piling up and need to get stuff varnished and installed.
Two coats of spar varnish done, one more to go
That’s pretty wood
Time to sand with 320 grit Mirka Abranet and break out the varnish
Matte finish is glossy when wet
Leave it to dry overnight
Next day, wet out the back sides and edges with US Composites epoxy
I’m sealing the back and edges of all mahogany panels in the hope that it stabilizes the visible finish. Also, if water ever gets in, it’ll run into epoxy instead of wood.
After sanding the aft deck wall frames, I applied a generous line of wood flour-thickened epoxy
Position the panel then get to clamping!
Padded blocks of wood on the outside of the window frame protect the paint from the clamps.
Next day, the clamps come off
Next, I glued a backing piece to the plywood, which will strengthen the corner joint
Epoxy wets out the beveled plywood edge
Wood flour and cabocil added to epoxy makes great mahogany-colored glue
Epoxy glue gets applied to the corner piece
Clamp the plywood to the corner piece
Nice joint
I need some push sticks to hold that backing piece in place
This thing’s squirrely…needed another push stick
Next day, the next panel is ready to install
That’s really pretty
Same gluing process followed by clamps and push sticks
The forward-most panel got installed at the same time
Back away slowly and don’t touch any of the push sticks
It took three practice runs (AKA complete failures) to finally get the push sticks positioned so they applied just a touch of force without sliding out of place.
