1969 Chris Craft Roamer 46 Refit: Wrapping Up the Salon Headliner Install

There are four areas on the boat that have headliner. We wrapped up the aft stateroom headliner first, followed by the V-berth. The salon headliner has been come along nicely, and now…it’s done! Which leaves only the aft deck ceiling, and that’s going to be a huge job…but all good things in due time.

The last few panels are going in today!

Prep work takes forever…the final touch is done in a blink

This is gorgeous

Safety rail hardware is hidden up behind that Whisper Wall panel

That’s just….so nice

Spray foam insulation is great. But looking at it every single weekend…I didn’t realize how oppressive it was. LOL I can get used to this Whisper Wall Ostrich Gelato.

OK…time to stop admiring the headliner perfection, bust out the razor knife and start slicin’ and dicin’.

Second to the last Kai LED light hole

I still get the willies when I cut through the headliner material. It’d be pretty hard to make a mistake at this point, but I still get nervous.

Check it out!

In case you were wondering, this is what I was hoping it would look like

A while back, after I posted one of the articles about prep work for the headliner, a commenter said something to the effect of “I think I see where you’re going with this.” That’s when I realized that just because I’ve got a vision in my head of how it will turn out, and I do my best to explain in this blog what I’ve got in mind for next steps, it’s maybe not equally clear to readers what I’m aiming for. I’d appreciate any comments letting me know how close I’ve come to YOUR impression of how this was going to turn out.

The last Kai light is in

Time for speakers!

I went with Infinity Kappa 62IX speakers throughout the boat

I considered hiding the speakers up behind the headliner, but I find these to be visually very appealing. And though I’d be the first to admit I’m not an audiophile, the sound is terrific. It’s really amazing, the difference between the Pyle shop-grade speakers I’ve been using and these.

The salon headliner is (pretty much) a wrap

The last headliner-related task will be to make the little hatch panel to access the under-side of the dashboard. But that can wait. For now, I’m calling this part of the refit done!

I have been silently following our venture and it is amazing. Did you install the Whisper Wall Ostrich Gelato ceiling yourself or was it done by the manufacture? I have a 85 Chris Craft 500 that I have been restoring and need to now replace the ceiling headliner. I love the way your turned out. I would appreciate any suggestions and or guidance.

    • Hi Stuart.
I have installed marine headliners before–perforated fabric and millions of staples–but for the Whisper Wall job I had a pro do it. The fellow lives in Annapolis, MD, so if you’re in the mid-Atlantic region I could put you in touch with him. He does carpentry and headliner installation at a boat manufacturer full-time, so he can only work side jobs on weekends. But he does very nice work.

Q, your vision is the same as mine so far, probably because you’re about as OCD as I, LOL! The only area that was ever so slightly different was what engines you were going to use. I totally get and agree with why you went with Cummins…modern, reliable, fuel efficient. For me, it was a toss up on what I would have done….there’s that one part of me that’s a real sucker for nostalgia, and I would have thought hard about installing the venerable Detroit Diesel 6-71’s, but ultimately the choice would have been Cummins.

      Thanks Frederic!
My Connie 52 had 6-71s. They’re great! Very durable! I loved the sound! But only for a while, and then they became tediously noisy.
      Stay tuned!

Really, really nice!!!!! I can’t imagine how nice it will look when all the boxes, materials, tools, and stuff are gone! 👍

      Thanks Jeff!
I know exactly what you mean! I have to pull back the cardboard from the finished panels every once in a while and it gives me a jolt every time how pretty the wood is. It’ll be nice when it’s finally done!
      Stay tuned!

Please don’t hate me for this but I was expecting a matt finish headlining, I’m afraid there will be too many reflections going on with the gloss walls and a reflective headlining, I’d be very careful how you finish the sole… I do love the quality that you achieve and insist upon, it is so refreshing in this “that’ll do” world we live in.

    • Hi Pete!
Sorry to be so late responding to you! For some reason, your message ended up caught in WordPress’s spam filter.
The only place I’ve used gloss varnish is inside cabinets. All of the visible varnish is satin. I agree that gloss on exterior/visible surfaces is too much.
Oh! And I also added you to the subscriber list, per your request last year. That was also in the spam filter, for some reason.
      Stay tuned.

I’ve been wondering what it takes to get full hero rating…you Canucks are a tough crowd, which is odd since you elected Trudeau’s brat…seems like you’d be more easily satisfied. LOL
